The first time Alexi picked up a camera was at age 15 in his first of what would turn out to be probably too many photography classes. It was his father's old film Nikon camera, and from that moment, he was hooked. Looking back at those photos over 20 years later, Alexi realized how bad he was at photography back then. But who is really that good when they first start a hobby, anyway? Thankfully, Alexi took more classes, experimented more, and slowly developed his own style, which is where he finds himself today.

Candid photos of his adventures and lifestyle portraits of pets are Alexi's bread and butter. Funnily enough, he has never taken a photo of bread or butter. Capturing fun, laughter, and good times is Alexi's mission when it comes to pressing the shutter release button, and that's about most of what you'll see here on his website. There is a smattering of landscape and cityscapes, along with some other commercial work—he does need to pay the bills occasionally.

Though scientists have yet to isolate the specific gene, Alexi most likely inherited his love for art from his father, an abstract artist who raised him in Boulder, Colorado. Any doubts that Alexi would soar to great artistic heights were quickly put to rest when, at the age of 10, he received the Boulder Valley School District Special Art Design Award for Outstanding Achievement in Art. His award-winning science-fair t-shirt design is still worn to this day (by Alexi’s girlfriend).

Alexi went on to study art with an emphasis on graphic design in Durango, Colorado. After graduation, Alexi worked all around the world, which was how he ended up living in China before, during, and after the Corona Virus outbreak—which was, when he thinks about it, pretty wild. While working in China, Alexi began to use ProCreate, bringing to life the idiosyncratic shapes that are now integral to all his work, which he calls ‘Hooeys.’

For several years, Hooeys were reserved for the people closest to Alexi, and his small but devoted Instagram following. However, in September of 2022, Alexi’s father passed away, leaving him with a strong sense that the torch had been passed to him. Now, a year and a half later, Hooeys have appeared in multiple art fairs. Alexi’s audience continues to grow, and the support he has received in response has been overwhelming.

Alexi lives in Denver with his supportive, t-shirt loving girlfriend, where they share a studio with their dog, Lazy Dale.
